PHOTOMIDWEST PORTFOLIO REVIEWS Saturday, September 25 - 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (On line registration is at the bottom of this page.) Feedback, feedback, feedback. Constructive criticism is an integral part of any creative process, and particularly photographic education. When if comes to your portfolio, you can never have enough professional, objective, educated feedback. PhotoMidwest 2010 and the Center for Photography at Madison is offering photographers the opportunity to have their work reviewed by a panel of diverse professionals who will provide valuable constructive feedback and guidance. In 20 minute one-on one sessions, reviewers can ask what your strongest piece is, your weakest and why. Concerns such as the sequence of work in a book, craftsmanship, overall brand identity or what part of an oevre should be further developed. Review Fee: Standard 3 Person Review - $75 (CPM members) $100 (non-members). Four Person Review - $110 (CPM members) $135 (non-members). Five Reviews - $125 (CPM members) $155 (non-members) . The basic registration is for three reviews. You select two of the reviewers. The Center for Photography at Madison PMW 2010 committee selects the third, but you may indicate a preference. We will do the best to honor it. If you select four reviews, you may select three of the reviewers; we will select the fourth; please indicate your fourth preference. You also have the option of five reviews. Once you have registered, you will be provided with a registration packet, noting the time and place of your reviews, your reviewers, as well as suggestions as to how to represent your work in a timely and effective manner. The reviewers are: Wally Mason is the Director of the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Haggerty is an academic art museum that hosts 9-12 exhibitions annually. From 1996-2007 he was the director of the University of Maine Museum of Art. He has curated over 90 exhibitions, most recently: Whatever is There is a Truth: Robert Rauschenberg’s Prints; Berenice Abbott: Cities Portraits; Prospect of Light: Plastic and Pinhole Images; Jocelyn Lee: Youth; Millions Taken Daily: Photographs from Everyone and Everywhere. Mason holds a BA from Beloit College and an MFA from Indiana University. Russell Joslin is editor and publisher of SHOTS Magazine, an independent reader supported quarterly journal of fine art photography based in Minneapolis that reaches an international audience, described as a "photographer's photography magazine." Mr. Joslin has worked primarily in photography since the early 90's, exhibiting his own work in solo and group shows as well as interviewing over 70 photographers, both celebrated and emerging, for the magazine. He has served as a reviewer at photography festivals including Houston's Fotofest, Photolucida in Portland, PhotoNOLA in New Orleans and for the Society of Photographic Education, as well as having curated exhibits. Andy Adams is the founding editor and publisher of FlakPhoto.com, a daily photography web site that is read by an international selection of photographers, galleries, publishers and editors. He has been part of review panels in Portland, Los Angeles, the United Kingdom and Australia, and has been an exhibition juror for many national and international photography exhibitions. He has worked as a photo editor, been a guest lecturer at Milwaukee School of Art and Design, and contributed to Photo-Eye Best Photobooks 2009. He has a background in digital media, photo editing and archiving, and is passionate about working with digital media to foster the art & culture of photography. Sonja Thomsen is a conceptual artist/photographer based in Milwaukee. She received an MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute, and a BA in Biology and Studio Art from Kenyon College. Her work has been featured in exhibits throughout the U.S., most recently in the Wisconsin Triennial (Madison Museum of Contemporary Art), Silverstein Photography (NYC), David Weinburg Gallery (Chicago) and Silver Eye Center for Photography (Pittsburgh). She was a Hermitage Fellow in 2008 and Santa Fe Prize nominee in 2009. She is an adjunct professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Tim Burton is the art director for Madison Magazine. He got his start in the design field during late ‘80s making cut-and-paste punk fanzines and spent his twenties touring the country with several hardcore and indie-rock bands. He is a frequent guest speaker at UW–Madison and MATC for design and journalism students and has run a successful photo-internship program with Madison Magazine for the past eight years. He brings this editorial/news/commercial photography experience to the review process. Please note that if you want three reviewers and list three, we will assume the third name is your preference and we will try our best to honor that. The same applies to four reviewers. We cannot assure you your third or fourth choice will be assigned.
