Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States is a campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of recognized U.S. historic and cultural sites throughout the month of September, 2018. It is part of Wiki Loves Monuments , an annual international photo competition where participants capture cultural heritage monuments and upload their photographs to the Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects.
Anyone is welcome to contribute to the project by uploading photos they've taken of registered cultural and historical sites throughout the United States. Once September is over, the best photos will win cash prizes and will be submitted to the international competition!
Submissions will be judged at the end of the year. The 2017 winners may be seen HERE.
How can you locate "registered cultural and historical sites" in Wisconsin or the US? There are about 80,000 listings in the National Register and State Register of Historic Places. Registered places in Madison are listed and mapped on a Wikipedia page. The Wisconsin Historical Society has a page HERE to get you started using the register. There are 248 in Dane County alone. Wikipedia has a similar page where you can select any state in the US.
