Times & Dates: 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM Saturday, JUNE 15 and 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Saturday, June 22, 2019. The week between the classes allows students to choose and purchase the type of mat, mounting, frame, and glazing before the second class.
Location: PhotoMidwest, 700 Rayovac Dr., Suite 212. ADA accessible. Free convenient parking in our adjacent parking lot.
Class size: Minimum of 4; limited to only 8 students maximum in this hands-on class.

Class Summary

This class will introduce the whole procedure of professional framing, including multiple ways of mounting, matting, glazing, and framing with the most commonly used materials. Participants can choose the best option to suit their photographs, so everyone can finish the class with a completed framed piece. The class will be two parts on two Saturdays:

1st Class Saturday, JUNE 15, 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM : Instructor will introduce different materials, such as the different types of frames, mounting boards, mats, etc, and demonstrate the following:

Conservation mount,
Mounting with heated dry-mount press
PMA (positional mounting adhesive)

How to calculate the window size for your photograph and existing frame
How to cut a mat with the mat cutters
How to attach the mat to the back board
How to protect the photo when there is no mat

How to order glass or plastic to size for a frame
How to secure glass for some particular framing

How to join an existing wooden frame
How to join a metal frame

How to finish a wood frame with backing paper, pompom, hanger, wire
How to finish a metal frame

After the 1st class, participants should choose how to frame their piece and purchase the materials as needed.

2nd Class Saturday, JUNE 22, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM: all participants will bring their materials and join their own piece. They will learn to use the rotary trimmer, mat cutters, dry mount press, picture frame point driver, and all the framing equipment that is available at Photomidwest. Instructor will provide help with all these steps.

Intended Audience

This is an introductory course for anyone who would like experience with matting and framing. It also enables you to make informed decsions if you choose a framing service and judge the quality of that service.

Instructor Bio:


DJ (Dongjiao) Sun is a Visual Artist and photographer ( who also works as an art work framer in Meuer Art & Framing in Madison.

She graduated from Xi’an academy of Fine arts in Xi’an - one of the most historical cities in China, after 5 years of studying graphic design. Obtained a master’s degree in Photography and Visual design from the Nuova Academia di belle arte in Milan, Italy. She moved to US in 2015 and has worked as an art work framer since then including with Creative Expressions and Meuer Art & Framing.


All student cancellations will incur a $10.00 processing fee, which will be deducted from any refund remitted. Cancellations more than thirty (30) days before the start of the first class session are refundable, less the above processing fee.

Cancellations at thirty (30) to fourteen (14) days before the start of the first class session will result in refunding half (50%) of the fees except for some classes where this is not feasible due to contractual arrangements with the instructor(s) and/or venue. Such exceptions will be noted in the listing of those classes.

Cancellations less than fourteen (14) days before the start of the first class session will result in the loss of all fees. You may arrange to have someone else fill your slot in the class but we must be notified of this substitution as soon as possible.  PhotoMidwest will have no involvement in any transfer of funds related to such substitutions.  If the slot in the class is not used, we will consider it as a donation to PhotoMidwest and as such, it may qualify as tax deductible.

In the rare case an entire class must be cancelled by PhotoMidwest, all students will receive a full refund. Partial cancellation of a single class session will typically be addressed via a rescheduled session, not a partial refund of fees.


By enrolling in this course, you consent to PhotoMidwest taking and publishing photographs of the course, which may include you, in its promotional materials to communicate what our classes, events, and/or facilities are like to potential members. To clarify, PhotoMidwest will never publish photographs YOU took without your specific written permission.
