You must be a PhotoMidwest member for these cruises.

Join other PhotoMidwest members for a 3-hour pontoon boat cruise on Lake Mendota to photograph the National Class A Scow (sailboat) Championship. What’s a Class A Scow? It is the largest and fastest of a sailboat type designed and developed right here in the Midwest to be the fastest sailboat on the Midwest’s inland lakes. The Class A Scow is 38 feet long; with enough wind it can tow a water skier. They held the monohull sailboat world speed record at 33 knots (38 mph) for decades. These boats are also big enough that you should not need a super telephoto lens to fill your viewfinder. Note that we will not be on the racecourse itself so as to not interfere with the boats in the race. We will position near the marks where crews will be scrambling to raise or lower sails and then retrim the sails for the next race leg.

In addition to the Class A Scow Championship we may be able to photograph the more conventional sailboats participating in the Summer Sailstice.

There is a maximum of 10 photographers per cruise to ensure everyone has an opportunity to photograph. This boat will leave rain or shine unless the entire cruise is cancelled by MSCR due to inaccessible lake levels or weather. Be prepared for any sort of weather for both yourself and your photography gear. We will send you a list of some things to consider when preparing for cruise to keep you comfortable and your photography gear protected. As noted above, the boat departs at 1 pm from the Tenney Park Boat House, 1615 Sherman Ave., Madison WI. See map below,.

Also included is a short class on sailboat regatta photography at PhotoMidwest during the week before the event.
